Trading in Public Places

You must obtain approval from the Shire to trade on public land to ensure public health and safety.

Trading is restricted to the permitted areas of the Trading Location maps below.

Trading on public thoroughfares is permitted subject to the Public Places and Local Government Property Local Law 2023.

To apply for a trading licence, you must fill in the application form below and provide the following documents:

  • Copy of Certificate of Currency for public liability insurance.
  • If you are selling food, we require your current food business registration certificate.

Community Groups

If you are a community group selling food you do not need to fill in a trading permit, but instead fill in the Exempt Food Premise Notification Form below and send it along with your public liability and food handling certificate which can be completed here - FREE Online Food Safety Training.

Mobile traders are only permitted to trade in zones allocated by the Shire and in accordance with the conditions listed on their permit to trade.
Alternative locations may be considered on application prior to commencing any trading activities but should be aligned to the intent of the Shire Policy and Mobile Food Trading Guidelines.


The following key will provide you with the approved locations for Mobile Trading within the Shire of Ashburton.
There are three (3) types of zones as follows:

Yellow
Open Location Open Trading Zones are for any trader with the appropriate permits to trade. Space is filled on a first-come-first-served basis.

Blue
Events Location Event Zones are reserved for trading during an approved event. Trading bays will be marked and numbered, and the event organiser will provide access and allocate bays for invited traders. A separate Trading Permit is not required if a trader is operating under an event approval.

Red
Restricted Location Trading is not permitted in these zones without permission of the Shire of Ashburton. These areas are marked to indicate where facility infrastructure like reticulation is located and will not support weight or the use of star pickets and or tent pegs.
