On the 21 September 2013, the soldiers of One Squadron, The Pilbara Regiment conducted Air Mobile Operations (AMO).

The exercise, named Karijini Escape, took place in the vicinity of the Area W Sports Oval Tom Price as well as parts of Karijini National Park.

Approximately 45 soldiers were involved this highly specialised training. The soldiers came from Newman (A Troop), Port Hedland (D Troop), Perth (H Troop) and our own B Troop soldiers from Tom Price.

The exercise enabled One Squadron to train in the conduct of AMO and practises their tactics techniques and procedures with Blackhawk Helicopters. The end result of Karijini Escape was an enhanced capability for the Army to operate across the Pilbara.

Soldiers practised procedures by day and by night, utilised night fighting equipment and specialised communications systems. This was the first time many of the soldiers were able to use these helicopters and their prior training paid big dividends.

For the Tom Price soldiers it was good to see the helicopters landing in their town. For the helicopter pilots, they enjoyed the friendly atmosphere of the town and the flying offered by the area.

Tom Price having the highest elevation in WA enabled the pilots to gain experience in high altitude flying as well as greater familiarity in operating in the Pilbara region.
