Seventeen basketball teams gathered in Onslow over the weekend to showcase their skills and strive for the winning trophy. With some of the region’s best basketball players in town for the annual Onslow Basketball Carnival, the thrill of the competition made for an exciting weekend.
Off the court, kids and families enjoyed a large array of activities – mini hoops, obstacle course, cheerleading sessions, art, craft and of course the ice-cream, food and merchandise give-aways.
Former Wildcats Captain Brad Robbins and former West Coast Eagle Travis Gasper were on hand throughout the carnival to share their skills and talent, as well as join in on the enthusiastic cheering from the side lines.
A joint collaboration between Buurabalayji Thalanyji Aboriginal Cooperation and the Shire of Ashburton, the carnival is aimed at promoting great sportsmanship and healthy lifestyle. With teams travelling to Onslow from throughout the North West, it has become a popular annual event with friendly rivalry and great skill development.
Shire President Kerry White said the carnival has established itself as a great opportunity to compete against other towns, and to enjoy the camaraderie that has developed over the years.
“It is always tremendous to see so many players and their families come to Onslow to participate in the competition,” said Cr White. “The excitement both on and off the court, and the high level of community involvement from our neighbouring towns, is a true testament to the ongoing success of the Onslow Basketball Carnival.”
Thalanyji CEO Matthew Slack said sports such as basketball helped to promote personal development, teamwork and physical fitness, as well as contributing to the social fabric of regional towns.
“Those benefits were on clear display over the weekend and Thalanyji is proud to have played a role in bringing this important annual event together,” Mr Slack said.
“The sportsmanship among the teams was a particularly pleasing.”
This year, the carnival awarded cash prizes to the Most Valuable Player in each category, thanks to the generous support of Brijarcus, Kulbardi, Onslow Workforce & Labour Solutions, Onslow Laundry Services and BRH Traditional Coatings.
As always, the grand finals were hard fought and made for an exciting end to the carnival weekend. Congratulations to all of the teams who took part in the competition.
