The first sod has been turned for regional Western Australia’s first public seawater desalination plant in Onslow. Under a $94 million program by Water Corporation and the Cook Government, this project will secure the town’s long-term drinking water supply.

The plant will have capacity to supply 1.5 million litres of climate-resilient drinking water each day and concludes a program of works to meet future demand, which is expected to double by 2045.

It will mean the Pilbara community no longer depends solely on the recently-upgraded Cane River borefield, which relies on heavy rainfall and cyclonic events for recharge.

Scheduled for completion by early-2026, the plant will be located on the coastal side of Beadon Creek Road and is designed to blend into the surrounding landscape.

More than $68 million has been provided by Chevron Australia under a long-standing State Agreement requiring the company to fund projects that deliver lasting community benefits in Onslow and across the Pilbara.

The Onslow Desalination Plant represents a key milestone in securing long-term growth and sustainability for the region.
