The Shire of Ashburton is thrilled to announce a significant milestone in the development of the Minna Oval Development Project, thanks to a generous commitment of $10 million in funding from Rio Tinto.

The project, estimated at $15 million, aims to create enhanced amenities and facilities at Minna Oval, providing a more diverse range of sporting options for the Tom Price community.

The existing playing fields in Tom Price are facing increased demand, making the development of Minna Oval crucial to cater to the community's growing needs. The proposed enhancements align with the objectives outlined in the Council's Community Infrastructure and Lifestyle Plan (CLIP) and Long-Term Financial Plan (LTFP), where Minna Oval has been identified as a priority project in Area W.

President Smith extended appreciation for Rio Tinto's commitment, recognising its value to the town of Tom Price.

"We are excited about the positive impact the Minna Oval Project will have on our community. Rio Tinto's generous contribution of $10 million underlines their dedication to fostering community development and supporting initiatives that promote health, well-being, and recreation.

“Enhancement of Minna Oval is a testament to the Shire of Ashburton's commitment to providing world-class facilities that cater to the diverse needs of its residents. The Shire looks forward to working closely with Rio Tinto and the community to make this vision a reality,” she said.

Rio Tinto Managing Director Port, Rail and Core Services, Richard Cohen said, “Sport plays a fundamental role in creating vibrant, healthy communities and we are proud to be partnering with the Shire of Ashburton to bring this project to life.

“We are committed to being a good local and leaving a positive, lasting impact on the communities around our operations.

“This investment demonstrates our long-term commitment to the community of Tom Price and our ongoing partnership with the Shire of Ashburton.”

The funding is part of the Inspire Community Partnership Agreement with Rio Tinto, showcasing a collaborative effort to enhance community infrastructure.

The Shire has allocated an initial $5 million in the 2023/24 budget to kickstart the development, with a construction tender expected to be issued towards the end of the budget year.

Majority of construction is anticipated to take place during the 2024/2025 period.
