Shire of Ashburton Welcomes Chief Executive Officer (Temporary) Dr Garry Hunt PSM 

The Shire of Ashburton welcomes Dr Garry Hunt PSM to the position of Chief Executive Officer (Temporary) for an initial six months. 

At December’s Ordinary Meeting of Council, Council resolved to appoint Dr Hunt to the role.  

Dr Hunt is a seasoned professional in the local government sector in Western Australia, with a career spanning over 45 years, including more than 30 years as a Chief Executive Officer (CEO).  

He has held executive positions since 1977, serving as CEO for the City of Melville and the City of Perth, each for eight years. In 2005, he was appointed CEO of the City of Joondalup, where he played a pivotal role in transforming the city into a benchmark local government and a thriving global city.  

In November 2023, Dr Hunt was appointed as the temporary CEO for the Shire of Donnybrook Balingup, bringing his extensive experience to guide the Shire's operations and collaboration with Councillors.  

President Smith is confident Dr Hunt will manage the Shire’s operations and strategic plans throughout the coming months. 

“Council is pleased to welcome Dr Garry Hunt PSM to Ashburton and join one of WA’s largest local governments by land mass. We trust his extensive experience and insights will assist the Shire in navigating our exciting and versatile project portfolio alongside the sectors complexities,” she said. 

Dr Hunt will fill the temporary role while the formal recruitment process to appoint a new Chief Executive Officer is undertaken.
